Pornography can be defined as the explicit depiction of sexual subject matter. Many teenagers, youths and adults all over the world are addicted to porn.
Addiction is a pathological relationship to mood altering experience that has life damaging consequence.
Today’s interview will give us an insight into the life of a young man who was addicted to porn. He requested to be anonymous.
*Welcome to yeyetomisin.com and a very big thank you for honoring this interview.
It’s totally fine, I actually feel great about this. I want to get my story out there and possibly inspire someone.
*That’s brilliant. Can you tell us how your childhood was like?
Well, I had an amazing childhood so to say. My father is an accountant while my mother works with the government. We weren’t overly rich but we were comfortable. My father made sure we didn’t lack anything. I am the first born and I have two younger siblings.
*At what age were you exposed to sexual things?
That should be when I was seven. My dad always made sure cartoon was the only thing we watched on TV back then. But I remember there was a day it was just us kids with the househelp at home and she put on a home video. In that movie, I remember a guy and a lady made out and eventually got right to action. That particular scene got imprinted in my head forever.
*Do you remember telling anyone about what you saw?
No I didn’t, I was too shy. And honestly it didn’t really make sense to me. But since that day, I became fascinated and I was always on the lookout for movie scenes like that.
*Was that was introduced you into pornography?
Well, in a way. When I clocked 10, my dad surprised me with a mobile phone. I remember being extremely joyous. The phone was given to me so I’ll be able to reach him directly instead of using the house-helps phone.
About two months after I was given the phone, I remember surfing the internet randomly and a pop-up appeared. It was a link to a pornography video. Curiosity got the better of me and that was how it all began. I kept on watching till I ran out of airtime.
*Did this in anyway affect your academics?
It did. I wasn’t able to concentrate in school. The teacher could be teaching and I’ll be fantasizing about the last video I watched. It was terrible, but somehow I never had a bad grade. Reason is because my parents threatened to seize my phone if I failed any subject. And I definitely didn’t want that cause of obvious reasons.
*Describe your level of addiction.
As I grew older, it became worse. When I graduated from high school, I got more access to the internet. I wouldn’t leave a porn site till my battery runs flat or I run out of data. It was sickening. All I could think of was sex, sex and more sex. That was what made me begin to masturbate.
I got into the university at the age of 18. I had freedom to do whatever I wanted to do either with my phone, myself or the ladies.
*At what point did you realize that you needed to quit?
That was when I was in my final year in the university. I couldn’t boast of a stable relationship all through my five years in school. I also got tired of the dirty and empty feeling after every time I watch the sexual videos. In all honesty, it was like every time I did it, a portion of my life was sucked out of me. I always told myself that that would be the last time I’ll do such a thing, but somehow, I still kept going back.
I realized I needed help. Fast. And living in this part of the world, an addiction is one of the most sacred thing to share with anyone.
*How then were you able to conquer the addiction?
Funny as it may seem, I told myself that I’ll only watch it once daily, then I moved it to once weekly then twice a month. It took a whole lot of self discipline to do this as there were times I desperately wanted to watch some.
Eventually, I went months without watching porn. Anytime the want came up, I’ll go watch funny videos on Instagram or YouTube. That way, I’ll forget and just get engrossed in the laughter.
Also, I began to attend sermons. I understood my life as a Christian better.
*So are you saying you’ve totally overcome the addiction?
Yes I have. Notwithstanding, there are times the need will arise. But I know better than to give into it. I’ll simply just distract to get over it for the time being.
*What advice would you give to those who wants to get rid of the addiction like you did.
First things first, you have to personally make up your mind. I’d advice you get busy. Honestly when you’re busy, your mind wouldn’t entertain such thoughts. Also, limit the time you spend on social media. Reason is because, social media applications now are littered with nude posts. If you can, get a roommate. He/she would subconsciously serve as your accountability partner as you wouldn’t want to be caught in the act by them. Lastly, pray about it.
